When I became Traffic Control Manager for the City of Victoria, one of the most challenging aspects of managing our traffic signal system was restoring degraded and outdated signal coordination across the network. Years of controller replacements, communication issues, and changing traffic patterns had gradually degraded progression along several of our major corridors. While I understood the fundamentals of signal timing, taking an entire corridor from data collection to developing a coordinated timing plan that produced measurable results seemed far more complex.
After nearly two years in my role, I came across one of Dr. Tian's LinkedIn posts demonstrating WaySync’s capabilities. What immediately stood out was how approachable the process appeared. Watching a corridor be optimized with just a few simple steps gave hope that coordination was something our team could successfully implement in-house.
Once I began using the software, I quickly realized WaySync was much more than an optimization tool. Building intersections, defining phasing, and importing traffic counts followed a logical workflow that was easy to learn. Whenever I had questions, the tutorial videos and occasional guidance from Dr. Tian helped me continue moving forward without feeling overwhelmed. Rather than feeling like I was learning a complicated software package, it felt like I was following a process that made sense.
The real payoff came when we implemented our first timing plans. We immediately began seeing measurable improvements in traffic progression, including more than a 40% reduction in stops on one corridor and millions of vehicle stops eliminated annually across the corridors we have optimized. Those early successes gave our team the confidence to continue expanding our coordination program.
As we completed post-implementation evaluations, I began to appreciate what truly sets WaySync apart from other platforms. WaySync not only develops timing plans but also provides practical tools to verify performance with their mobile version WaySync-M.
Perhaps the most valuable feature as a Manager has been their reports. The Before/After Cost-Benefit Analysis and Corridor Synchronization Performance Index reports communicate technical improvements in a format that is easy for leadership and stakeholders to understand. We can clearly demonstrate reductions in delay, stops, travel time, fuel consumption, emissions, and overall economic benefits.
For our team, WaySync has simplified a complex process while providing the tools needed to verify results and communicate their value. It has become an important part of how we manage and improve our traffic signal system and the driving experience for our cities road users.
